The Next Open Platform: Gaming Systems

bbc logoWe’ve seen it with personal computers and we’re seeing it with mobile phones, so it’s interesting to note that video game consoles are the next digital hardware to be considered for a single platform.

There are about 14 different gaming systems for which major video game developers, such as Electronic Arts, design titles. Video game design industry veteran, Mark Skaggs, notes “attention could be more squarely focused on creating content rather than re-jiggering code and graphics to work.” Sound familiar?

This BBC article floats the idea of simply having Nintendo, Playstation and Xbox channels on your HDTV set-top box or games being delivered purely over the web, instead of the proliferation of standalone consoles. I wonder what the monitors and input devices for these kinds of one-stop-shop hardware will be like.
