Nokia Working On “Emotional Phone” Technology

Rather than develop a device to compete with the iPhone, Nokia is focusing on a “UI accelerator kit” that will work with any device running Symbian S60. This is an approach similar to that being adopted by Microsoft for its Windows Mobile 7 platform.

Not content to simply emulate the iPhone’s popular multi-touch display, Nokia seems to be taking it a few steps further by including gesture recognition whereby optical sensors identify and record finger motion. The resulting motion patterns are then translated into controls. This all amounts to a sort of quasi-sign-language, enabling users to perform much-desired operations like copy, cut and paste.
