Verizon Will Go Open Access in 2008
November 27th, 2007 by Kyle Outlaw
Verizon announced today that any application, run on any device will have full access to its spectrum beginning in 2008. This will be well in advance of the 700MHz spectrum’s availability in 2011 (to be auctioned in January of next year). As with Google’s Android and Nokia’s S60 developer programs, Verizon is taking steps to kick start wireless innovation by releasing its CDMA network standards and opening the program up to all third party developers who meet its basic certification requirements. The move is largely in response to Google’s stated interest in the 700MHz spectrum and it represents a major shift away from Verizon’s recent positions on open access.
