More Disruptive Tech: Enter the gPhone
November 4th, 2007 by Kyle OutlawThe WallStreet Journal reports that Google is set to announce its wireless strategy within the next two weeks. There have been plenty of rumors over the last several months, but in a nutshell it sounds like Google has developed its own mobile operating system, intended to run on several different devices with familiar applications such as Maps, YouTube, and Docs.
According to the article the platform will be open source down to the level of the operating system in an apparent effort to kickstart mass innovation by third-party developers. Developers will have access to native phone applications such as GPS and contact lists. How this all goes down with the carriers will be interesting to watch.
