Mobile Voice-Enabled Search
October 29th, 2007 by Kyle OutlawTellme Networks, recently aquired by Microsoft, is doing some interesting work in the mobile space right now. Tellme beta is a java application (and a free alternative to 411) that lets customers search business directories using voice. Results are displayed in text with links to maps, directions, and related searches.
From an interaction design perspective, this combination of voice and text is an intriguing solution to some standard complaints about mobile browsing, such as text-entry and scrolling. The overall experience is more like a conversation with the application than a typical web search. Tellme beta is currently available for AT&T and Sprint subscribers and is compatible with LG, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and other java-enabled handsets.
